What is HTML 5.0?

HTML5 is a markup language for organising and displaying content on the World Wide Web. It is the 5th and latest HTML recommendation from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The objective of HTML5 was to improve the language with reliably media for PCs and mobile devices. HTML5 has since replaced HTML 4 as well as XHTML 1 and DOM Level 2 HTML.

What's new in HTML5 for web developers?

For web developers, In addition to Language features, HTML 5 specifies APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that can be used with JavaScript to access device capabilites. Existing Document Object Model (DOM) interfaces are extended significantly and all of the existing features well documented. HTML5 introduced a lot of new features like:

- Canvas (For animations)
- Offline (Websites no longer require internet connection always)
- Drag and drop (Uploading files are lot easier)
- Web Messaging (For iFrames and embeddable content)
- Web Storage (Store data on browsers)
- Microdata (Unfortunately not supported widely)

Flash no longer used

Adobe flash used to be used extensively. It opened up issues with security and compatibility on mobile devices. A lot of readers are not familiar with it but Flash used to be a big deal. It used to be the only way video was played on the web before HTML5. HTML5 slowly but surely caused Flash to die out from the web. It no longer be supported at the end of 2020.
